Today, we say “salute” to a favorite fruit of the season, the strawberry. Our Strawberry Shortcake** is just one of the three ways we’ve highlighted strawberries on our Chef’s Features menu, available through July 30th*. Perhaps it’s the buttery, biscuit-like shortcakes, homemade whipped cream, candied lemon zest, or the vanilla bean glaze that makes it so dreamy, but the bright red, juicy strawberries perfect this dessert. Here are just a few reasons why we celebrate this tasty fruit:
- Strawberries are a great source of vitamin C, fiber, folate and potassium
- Low in sugar, but naturally sweet, a serving of eight medium-sized strawberries has more vitamin C than an orange and contains only 45 calories and 7 grams of sugar
- Did you know that California produces 88% of US-grown strawberries? That’s because California’s unique environment means that delicious, healthy strawberries are always in season
- We think it’s pretty cool that California strawberry growers live and work in the communities where they grow strawberries: they are dedicated to the health and safety of their workers, families and communities
